Over the course of this weekend, we will engage in updates and debates spanning a wide spectrum of subjects within our specialty. One of the hallmarks of our meeting, as noted by many, is the diverse range of topics covered, reflecting the dynamic nature of our field.

For numerous years, this gathering has held a prominent position in our organization’s calendar. It is a source of immense pride for us when we hear from past participants who hold this event in the same high regard.

The Alistair Fielder Prize in Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology trainees and medical students are cordially invited to participate in the esteemed Alistair Fielder Prize in Ophthalmology. Named in honour of Professor Alistair Fielder, who annually chairs the judging committee, this competition offers a platform for showcasing exceptional case presentations by participants.

There are two prize categories: one designated for medical students and the other for ophthalmic trainees or fellows at any stage of their training. Additionally, a prize will be awarded for the best poster presentation.

Regulations:

• Trainee participants must prepare and present a case or case series, or a research paper. The trainee must have been personally involved in the presented case or taken an active role in the research project.
• Medical students are encouraged to present cases provided by their supervising clinical trainers, supplemented by their own background clinical research on the case.
• Presentations should aim to enhance clinical practice by conveying valuable lessons from the case scenario. The judging committee, comprising of Professor Alistair Fielder and three other consultants, will evaluate contestants based on presentation skills, clinical significance, scientific content, and originality. The judging panel may pose questions to the presenters, but audience questions will not be permitted.
• The Pantheo team is pleased to offer cases and guidance to medical students for both presentations and posters, as is customary each year. Students may collaborate in groups of two or three for poster presentations.

From Glaucos to Glaucoma

Professor Tarek Shaarawy MD MSc FRCOphth, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Head of Glaucoma Unit, University of Geneva Hospitals, Switzerland

Tarek M. Shaarawy is the Head of the Glaucoma unit, and the Glaucoma surgery research group at the University of Geneva Hospitals. He obtained both his medical bachelor and Masters Degree in ophthalmology at the University of Cairo, and his Doctorate in Medicine degree from the University of Lausanne. He trained in ophthalmology at the Cairo Research Institute of Ophthalmology and completed two glaucoma fellowships at the Universities of Lausanne and Basel. He is currently the President of the International Society of Glaucoma surgery and serving as a member of the board of Governors of the World Glaucoma Association.

His main research interests are surgical techniques of Glaucoma surgery, normal pressure glaucoma, and glaucoma patterns of practice in developed and developing countries. He is the author and editor of seven text books on Glaucoma, and more than 120 book chapters and publications in peer reviewed journals. He is the editor in chief of the journal of current glaucoma practice, he also serves on the editorial board of many ophthalmology journals, including the International Journal of Ophthalmology, the Journal of Glaucoma, the Canadian Journal of ophthalmology, the Middle East African Journal of ophthalmology, and The Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology, among others.

In addition to his glaucoma practice Tarek Shaarawy is active in a number of NGOs dealing with global prevention of blindness, and is a founder member of the board of trustees of the Baladi Foundation, which serves patients in upper Egypt.

Potential of Immunotherapy for treatment of age-related macular degeneration

Sofia Theodoropoulou, MD, PhD, FRCOphth is a graduate of Athens Medical School and has been full trained in Surgical Ophthalmology in United Kingdom (Cambridge, Bristol).  She is a member of Royal College of Ophthalmologists, UK, while she has performed a fellowship in MEEI, Harvard Medical School, and also completed a PhD in Ophthalmology.

She has been Associate Professor (Senior Lecturer) in University of Bristol and consultant ophthalmologist at NHS. She has received numerous awards and grants, including the Global Ophthalmology Award from Bayer (2017) for her contribution in treatment in retinal diseases  and a grant from the Academy of Medical Sciences for Immunotherapy for macular degeneration (2016). She has numerous publications and presentation in international conferences, with over 800 citations.

Since 2022, she is consultant ophthalmologist at Hygeia Hospital, Athens, Greece.
