World Ophthalmology Congress 2018 in Barcelona
Pantheo leading members speaking at the World Ophthalmology Congress 2018 in Barcelona
At the recent 2018 World Ophthalmology Congress in Barcelona, the Cyprus Ophthalmological Society had the honorable task of co-organizing two sessions entitled “Contemporary Aspects of Surgical Management of Ocular Trauma” and “Keratoconus Novel Approaches”. These were run in conjunction with the Greek, Romanian and Ukrainian Ophthalmological Societies. Ten presentations in each session generated a lively and fruitful discussion with experts sharing personal experience and published evidence on the complex issues at hand.
Cyprus was represented by Dr Theodoros Potamitis (society president and session chair) with a talk entitled “Management of Post traumatic Aphakia”, Dr Petros Aristodemou (society secretary) with a talk entitled “Evidence based approach to ocular trauma” and Dr Michalis Palos with a talk entitled. “Modern Approaches in Corneal Transplantation for Keratoconus”
The organization of these events was extremely well received by both the participants and the World Ophthalmology Congress committee. All of the involved societies received very positive feedback and an invitation was extended to organize a similar event in the next WOC congress in Cape Town in 2020.
The involvement of our society in events of this caliber is a testament to the level of ophthalmology care in our country as a whole, and by extension the quality of todays ophthalmologist in Cyprus. Only a few years ago patients needed to be referred to ophthalmic centers outside Cyprus for conditions such as retinal detachment, macular hole, corneal transplantation and many others. Today these and many other conditions are routinely and successfully treated by many of our local ophthalmologists right here at home, giving better care for the patient and raising the health care standards of our country. Our continued medical development is paramount to the future of ophthalmology and our main goal as a society is to aid and support this development.
